Video Marketing for Lake Cumberland Tourism Businesses: How to Win a Seasonal Market

July 24, 20264 min readVideo, Tourism, Lake Cumberland, Somerset KY, Local Marketing

The Season Is Short. The Scroll Is Year-Round.

If you run a business around Lake Cumberland — a marina, a houseboat rental, a resort, a restaurant in Burnside or Somerset — you already know the math. You have roughly Memorial Day through September to make your year. Every empty slip, every unbooked weekend, every slow Tuesday in July is revenue you never get back.

Here's what most Lake Cumberland businesses miss: the booking decision doesn't happen in June. It happens in January, February, and March, when a family in Louisville, Nashville, or Cincinnati is sitting on the couch planning their summer. And the business they pick is almost never the one with the best dock or the best burger. It's the one they saw.

Video is how you get seen.

Why Video Beats Everything Else for Lake Businesses

Lake Cumberland sells itself — 65,000 acres of water, the houseboat capital of the world, sunsets that don't need a filter. That's exactly why video is unfair leverage here: your product is visual. A text ad can't show a kid jumping off the top deck of a houseboat. A radio spot can't show the water at golden hour.

What 30 seconds of good footage does that nothing else can:

  • It sells the feeling, not the feature list. Nobody books a houseboat because it "sleeps 12." They book it because they watched a video and pictured their family on it.

  • It travels. One good reel gets shared into group chats — "this is the place I was telling you about" — and group chats are where vacation decisions actually get made.

  • It works while you sleep. A video you shoot in August sells bookings the following February, and the February after that.

The Content That Actually Books Trips

After producing video across Kentucky for tourism, hospitality, and small-town businesses, here's the shortlist that earns its keep on the lake:

1. The "This Is What Your Weekend Looks Like" Film

A 60–90 second brand film that walks through the guest experience start to finish: arrival, keys, pulling away from the dock, the cove, the cookout, the sunset. Shot once, used everywhere — website, ads, social, email. This is the single highest-value asset a lake business can own.

2. Short-Form Reels, Posted in the Off-Season

Everyone posts in July. The smart move is holding your best summer footage and drip-feeding it from January to April, when your future guests are dreaming and your competitors are silent. A library of 20–30 reels shot in one season becomes a year of marketing.

3. Drone Footage (Done Legally)

Nothing communicates the scale of Lake Cumberland like aerial video. It's also the fastest way to differentiate a marina or resort — most are still using photos taken from the parking lot. Make sure whoever flies is FAA Part 107 certified; we are.

4. The Local's Guide

"Three coves worth the boat ride." "Where locals actually eat in Somerset." Guide-style content earns saves and shares, ranks in search, and positions your business as the insider — which is exactly the trust a first-time visitor is looking for.

A Somerset-Sized Budget Is Enough

You don't need a Nashville production budget. The businesses winning on the lake are working with one well-planned shoot day per season: a few hours on the water, a golden-hour window, a shot list built around how the footage will actually be used. From that single day you get the brand film, the reel library, and the ad creative.

What kills results isn't a small budget — it's phone footage shot vertically-sometimes-horizontally by whoever was standing closest, posted twice in July, and forgotten.

The Off-Season Is the Deadline

If there's one thing to take from this: your summer marketing is made in the winter. The Lake Cumberland businesses that will own next season are shooting and stockpiling content this season.
